Harkstead village is beautifully located by the river Stour on the Shotley Peninsula. The area is popular with walkers, cyclists and wildlife enthusiasts. The Bakers Arms pub in the village centre offers a place to relax with food and refreshment for locals and visitors.

A village hall was first established in 1947 using a former chicken hut. The building was well used for many years. By the late 1980’s it was decided a new hall was needed. This was completed in 1993 with public grants, a loan and hard work by local groups in the parish to raise £20,000.

Over the years Harkstead village hall has gone from strength to strength and all running costs are met from the range of activities it provides. Regular sessions include an Art Group, Carpet Bowls and a Coffee morning.

Twice per year a general Auction is held in the hall which attracts sellers and buyers from a wide geographical area.

A Farmers Market is held on the third Saturday of every month. This draws a variety of traders and has become very popular. More information on the Farmers Market can be found at our dedicated website:

The hall has recently been re-decorated and is well equipped and in demand for private functions. Feedback from users is very positive about the facilities, accessibility and general level of maintenance.

Harkstead village hall and the site is a charitable trust and managed by a committee of elected trustees. The hall meets all legislation with regard to health and safety and fire regulations.
